Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has been inaugurated for a sixth term in an unannounced ceremony.

It would be recalled that Mr. Lukashenko’s re-election ended up in a dispute last month and consequently prompted weeks of mass protests.

State media said several hundred people attended the ceremony at the Palace of Independence in central Minsk.

Streets were sealed off as Mr. Lukashenko’s motorcade raced through the city, eye witnesses said.

“Presidential inaugurations are normally publicised well in advance as major state occasions, but this deviation can be likened to a gangster meeting,” a Belarusian said.

State news agency, Belta reported on Wednesday that: “Alexander Lukashenko has taken office as President of Belarus. The inauguration ceremony is taking place in these minutes in the Palace of Independence.”

Alexander Lukashenko takes the oath of office as Belarusian President during a swearing-in ceremony in Minsk, Belarus September 23.

Mr. Lukashenko said Belarus is more important to him and he needs to save the country especially at a time of global insecurity.
