EXPERT CALLS FOR PROTECTION OF ECOSYSTEM TO MARK WILDLIFE DAY

As the World commemorates Wildlife Day, governments at various levels have been enjoined to make policies to protect the ecosystem.

An Associate Professor   in the department of Forest Resources Management, University of Ilorin, Folaranmi Babalola gave the advice in an exclusive interview with correspondent Lanre Omotoso in Ilorin.

Dr Babalola who identified ecosystem as various species of wild animals and plants, said human-being depend on them for livelihood and survival.

Speaking on the theme for this year World Wildlife Day “Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration”, the forester said animal such as vulture is created to remove carcass on the roads to make the environment clean.

The university don who condemned killing of wild animals as food which may lead to their extinction, stressed that wild animals such as pangolin, elephants and lions could be conserved through forest reserve, game reserve and national parks for tourism and research purposes.

The United Nations General Assembly at its 68th session in 2013 proclaimed March Three as World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness on importance of wild animals and plants.

According to the data from International Union for Conservation of Nature, over 8,400 species of wild animals and plants are critically endangered, while close to 30,000 more are to be endangered, whereas human-being rely on them for food, fuel, medicines, housing and clothing.
