All Farmers Association of Nigeria, AFAN, has attributed high cost of foodstuffs in the country to kidnapping and killing of farmers.

Kwara State Chairman of AFAN, Comrade Umar Aboki made the attribution in an exclusive interview with Correspondent Lanre Omotoso in Ilorin.

Comrade Aboki said because of insecurity in the country, most farmers have abandoned their farmlands for fear of being kidnapped for ransom or killed by bandit, hence the rise in the price of foodstuffs.

The Kwara State Chairman of AFAN called for creation of state police to complement federal police to guide against kidnapping, banditry and killings.

While commending Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for subsidizing agricultural inputs for farmers in Kwara State, Comrade Aboki urged the Governor to provide more fertilizers, chemicals and soft loans.

He maintained that subsidizing fertilizers, chemicals and tractors would encourage more youth and women to venture into agriculture to guarantee food security.

He emphasized that tractors acquired by Governor AbdulRazaq should be deployed to farmers on time for cultivation before the rain subsided.

The Kwara State Chairman of AFAN noted that early deployment of tractors at subsidized rates and other farm inputs would help them to have bumper harvest that would translate to cheaper and affordable foods.
