There was a heavy traffic gridlock at Idofian community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State this morning following a peaceful protest by the community who barricaded the popular Ilorin/Ajase-ipo highway.

The protest was said to be due to the death of a Fifteen year old girl who was hit by a vehicle yesterday.

The protest left many commuters stranded.

According to the protesting youth, since the reconstruction of the Ilorin/Ajase-ipo federal highway the community lost many lives as a result of reckless driving and over speeding of some drivers.

Speaking with Radio Nigeria, Chairman of the Idofian Community, Chief Lanre Odofin appealed to the government to proffer a lasting solution to the incessant accident at the community as their people were killed almost every day.

He explained that the community had written several letters to the Federal Ministry of Works and Federal Road Safety Commission on the need to provide speed breakers in the community but nothing was done.

Chief Lanre Odofin, however, cautioned the youth not to take laws into their hands and ensure they maintain the peace of the community.

Speaking on behalf of the youth, Mr Kamaldeen Abolarin said that what they were agitating for was provision of bonds to reduce the speed of vehicles, as this would safe many lives in the community.

The Iyaloja of Idofian, Hajia Aminatu Aminullah also called on relevant authorities to assist the community in reducing the rate of road accidents claiming the lives of the people.

Meanwhile, the protests which lasted for about four hours was brought under control by the Idofian Police Division, Federal Road Safety Commission, Idofian unit and other sister security agencies in the area.
