As the World commemorates International Day of Forests, expert has called on Federal Government to come up with policies and programmes that will end deforestation.

A lecturer in the Department of Forest Management, University of Ilorin, Dr.Tajudeen Amusa, made the call in an exclusive interview with Radio Nigeria correspondent, Lanre Omotoso, on the occasion of this year’s International Day of Forests, in Ilorin.

Dr. Amusa who spoke on the need for forest preservation, said International Day of Forests is marked to discourage cutting of trees for the sake of modernization and urbanization, without planting.

Speaking on this year’s theme, “Forests and Sustainable Production and Consumption”, the University Don stressed that human life has direct connection with forest as it provides humans with medicines, foods, clothings amongst others.

Dr Amusa maintained that despite the direct connection of forest with human-being, it must not be over-utilized to the detriment of future generations.

Dr. Amusa explained that forest sustainable management is key to combating climate change, poverty alleviation and contribute to the prosperity and well-being of the present and future generations.

The United Nations General Assembly in 2012 proclaimed March Twenty-One the International Day of Forests to celebrate and raise awareness on the importance of all types of forests as well as the importance of engaging in tree planting.
