Kwara : Fish Farmer, Residents Appeal For Help As Heavy Rain Wash Away Farmlands in Ira And Kaiama

Following the heavy rainfall in Kwara State that destroyed farmlands, property and roads, the affected people have called on government at various levels to come to their aids.

Former Kwara State chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Comrade Ajibola Olawale said he lost fish worth over One Million Naira as well as rice amount to half a Million Naira to the flooding in an exclusive interview with correspondent Lanre Omotoso.

Comrade Olawale said he had never experience flooding on his farmland in Irra, Oyun local government of Kwara South where he had been rearing fish and planting crop for over Fifteen years.

Similarly, Ciroma of Kaiama in Kwara North, Alhaji Abubakar Omar explained that the rain washed away roads, bridges and farmland in their area.

Alhaji Abubakar Omar appealed to Federal, State and Local Government to fix the affected roads and provide palliative for affected persons to cushion effects of the flooding.

Meanwhile, a lecturer in the department of Agric Extension and Rural Development, University of Ilorin, Dr. Kareem Waheed advised government at various levels to construct more dams across nooks and crannies of the country to harvest run-off water.

Dr Waheed said construction of more dams would enable the country to harvest excess rain water that could be stored and be useful for agricultural purposes during dry season as practised in America and some Asia countries.
