KWASU Don Calls For An End To Local Government/State Joint Account To Straddle Development Across Nigeria

The implication of local government state joint account is that their is denial of funds to explore the Potentials of these local government areas and their natural resources to ignite the development which they yearn for.

Professor Abdulrauf Ambali re-echoed this during the 8th Inaugural lecture of the Kwara State University, Malate, entitled, ” Administration and Governance at the Brink of Collapse: A Search for the Root Cause and Ways to Reposition the system”.

Professor Ambali who is also the Director of Academic Planning of the University blamed Nigeria’s governance and administrative problem on poor planning and system corruption.

The University Don said continuous romance of local government allocation by state governors in the name of local/state joint account will continue to impede Nigeria’s development and consequently bleed her to stupor, noting that such arrangement has no other nomenclature than corruption.

He identified corruption as a cankerworm that has devastating consequences on families, communities, private and public services as well as other facets of life.

” It has created a lot of difficulties for innocent citizens and has caused psychological depression for the people either in their place of work or institutions. Corruption became the principal means of wealth accumulation today; in the absence of other means, it came to shape political activity in the country”, Ambali said.

He recommended total autonomy for local government to fast track development across the country, repositioning of leadership-followership mindset as well as adoption of digital administration and governance as policy for citizen participation and effective rule of law to curb the menace.

In his remark, Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Muhammad Mustapha Akanbi, SAN, while reading the citation of the inaugural lecturer, presented Prof. Ambali as a first class graduate in public administration from the referred International Islamic University of Malaysia, with over 85 articles in high impact journals and 8 text books braced by reputable publishers across the world.

The Vice Chancellor commended the inaugural lecturer for his academic doggedness which spans decades, attracted local and international grants worth millions of dollars as well as producing young and promising scholars from undergraduate to Ph.D. level.
