Mali gets new President after military coup

Mali, on Friday sworn in interim president, Bah Ndaw, to head a transitional government following a coup last month.

Ndaw was sworn in at a ceremony in the capital Bamako on Friday, State Media confirmed.

70-year-old Ndaw who is a retired colonel was chosen as interim president by a committee set up by the junta that hijacked power on August 18, halting president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita’ s reign.

Ndaw is expected to lead a transition government for a maximum of 18 months before conducting national elections.

Colonel Assimi Goita, who led the military junta, was also sworn in as interim vice president.

The ceremony took place in an arena that was occupied by military officers, senior judges, and foreign diplomats.

Supreme Court Chief Prosecutor, Boya Dembele described the challenges facing both leaders as “enormous” during the ceremony.
