The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in Kwara State has denied having any agreement with Kwara State Government on the proposed N30, 000 minimum wage for workers in the state.

The NLC made this known in a statememt issued to newsmen by its Chairman, Comrade Aliyu Issa Ore, while reacting to a statement credited to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mallam. Rafiu Ajakaiye, where he said the issue of the minimum wage is already clear and unambigious element in the 2021 budget signed into law.

The union clarified that, since it suspended its industrial action in 2020, the state government and her negotiators have been playing hide and seek, saying that it’s a deliberate attempt to ensure that workers welfare is relegated to the back stage of governance.

The statement also maintained that, while the Chief Press Secretary has every right to speak for the government on state budget, he lacks the moral right to demean the collective intelligence of Kwara state workers as he was not a member of the negotiating committee.

The NLC therefore urged workers in the sttae to disregard the statement on the issue of minimum wage in the state, as the Governor is yet to sign the collective agreement for its implementation.
