State and Local Governments have been urged to complement efforts of Federal Government through provision of enough tractors, improved seedlings as well as clearing of lands for farmers so that rice can be affordable and available all year round.

President, Kwara State Agric-Business Farmers, Comrade Baba Sanni made the call in an exclusive interview with Lanre Omotoso in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Comrade Sanni said that Federal Government through its Anchor Borrower Programme had assisted rice farmers in Kwara State with fund, tractors and improved seedling.

Comrade Sanni explained that farmers in Kwara State intended to cultivate about One Thousand hectares of rice farm this dry season but were prevented due to unavailable cleared land.

While noting that Nigerian farmers have the capacity to produce enough rice for Nigerians’ consumption, the rice farmer insisted that when given enough assistance, Nigerian rice which is nutritious could be de-stone and polished to compete with foreign ones.

He urged government to make sure that they give assistance to real farmers for them to be able to produce enough food for the country.

The President, Kwara State Agric-Business Farmers, however, advised farmers to always put in their best and not to rely too much on government assistance.
