As price of crude oil is below budgeted Fifty-Seven Dollars per barrel which negatively affects the monthly federal allocation, government at all levels have been urged to appropriate more funds to agriculture to cushion the effect.

Professor AbdulAzeez Muhammad-Lawal of Department of Agricultural-Economics and Farm Management, University of Ilorin gave the advice in an exclusive interview with Correspondent Lanre Omotoso.

Professor Muhammad-Lawal said allocating more funds into all aspects of agriculture such as crop farming, fishery, animal husbandry among others would enable Nigeria to withstand the shock of dwindling oil price.

While noting that no amount is too exhorbitant to be allocated to agriculture as its output outweigh the inputs, Professor Muhammad-Lawal however called for proper monitoring of allocation into agricultural sector to avoid misappriopration.

The Professor of Agricultural-Economics also emphasized on need to optimally utilise all the agricultural value-chains from production, processing and marketing to reduce unemployment among youth and increase the country’s Internally Generated Revenue.
