The National Financial Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mallam Biodun Abdulkareem, has described Abdullahi Dare Akogun as a good candidate that has all the attributes to lead the Kwara council of the body.

He gave the recommendation on Tuesday when the campaign train of Akogun visited the Herald Chapel in Ilorin.

The two time chairman of the council said Akogun had shown from his manifestos that he is ready for the job, which implies that the NUJ in the state is blessed to have the arrays of contestants vying for the position of chairmanship of the union.

He advised that anyone who emerged at the end of the day should pursue the path of unity, peace and collective progress of the union despite the seemingly difference.

The Chairman of Herald Chapel, Malam Jimoh Bashir admonished all candidates in the union election to see the contest as a friendly affair that should focused towards unifying members of the union.

He also advised that every member of the union should rally behind any candidate that emerged at the end of the exercise for the development of the union and its members.

Earlier in his speech Akogun promised that if voted into power his administration will focus on training and retraining of members for them to be relevant in the new media era.

According to him, “This promise if I was voted into power will focus on Training and Retraining of our members to help them stand the test of time in the changing world of news gathering and be relevant in the new media era.

“If we are voted into power we would collaborate with the state government to ensure that the administration equip all the state government-owned media outfits, The Herald , Kwara State  Broadcasting Corporation, Kwara TV, and the state Ministry of Communication to meet with the digital media world”, he said.

Akogun maintained that he recognizes  there is a certain presumptuousness to his move to become the chairman of the state council, but however maintained that he believe he is capable with the wealth of experience to lead the state council.

“I know I might not have spent a lot of time learning the ways of the union in the state. But I have been here long enough to know that the ways the union is being run must be changed.

“The genius of our founding fathers is that they designed a system of a union  that can be changed and we should take heart, because generations before us have achieved this change before.

“Our dear Union has been unfortunately bogged down by our chronic avoidance of tough decisions, our preference for scoring cheap political points instead of rolling up our sleeves and building a working consensus to tackle big problems,” he added.
