A bill seeking to scrap the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme has reached it second reading as the House of Representatives is considering a possible discontinuation of the scheme.
The 2020 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Alteration Bill 2020 which seeks to abolish the NYSC Act is scheduled for a second reading.
Mr. Akaji Inombek Abiante, the sponsor of the bill in an explanatory memorandum of the proposal explained that incessant killings of innocent corps members in various parts of the country as a result of banditry, religious extremism, and ethnic violence as well as kidnapping of innocent corps members across the country was necessary, the bill reaches its second reading.
“Public and private agencies/departments are no longer recruiting able and qualified Nigerian youths, thus relying heavily on the availability of corps members who are not being well remunerated and get discarded with impunity at the end of their service year without any hope of being employed.
Due to insecurity across the country, the National Youth Service Corps management now gives considerations to posting corps members to their geographical zone, thus defeating one of the objectives of setting up the service corps i.e developing common ties among Nigerian youths and promote national unity and integration”.
Various prospective corps members have frowned at the proposal via social media platforms against the scrapping of the scheme which was established on May 22nd 1973, under decree No. 24 which was set in a bid to reconcile and reintegrate Nigerians after the civil war which lasted for 4 years.
