A developmental analyst, Dr. Muhammed Idris Danjuma has emphasised the need for government to kick-start citizen-driven initiative for rural development.

He made the call in an interaction with Maxilensnews.

Dr. Danjuma who is also the head, Department of Politics and Governance, Kwara State University said one of the ways for government to actualize its vision for evenly developed rural environments is to critically engage the citizens to sparehead development initiative at local levels.

” Since it is impossible for government to mark its present in all rural areas at a time due to limited resources, it is rather cheaper and better for government to allow the rural dwellers drive its development initiative, this it can achieve by allowing the people come up with their own ideas that suit their locality, while the government invest in the idea inform of partnership,” Danjuma said.

The ideas should cut across all spectra of farming and trade, which fit into the natural occupation of rural communities.

He said the Community Based Development Initiative (CBDI) is expected to be an integration of people’s idea with government’s resources and not government’s idea with government’s resources.

Dr. Danjuma conceived Development as the complete transformation of a society, its attitudes and institutions, eradication of poverty, inequality and provision of the basic needs of the people towards making life worth living just as rural development is that part of development that seeks to enhance the quality of life in the rural area through enhancing the provision of basic infrastructural facilities to make life worth living in the area.

To make rural development easy for a state with heterogeneity, there’s need for transformation approach built on core understanding of people’s need, will and capacity, this will trickle down to comparative advantage, ” Danjuma concluded.
