KWHA charges State Government to curb illegal mining in the state

Kwara State House of Assembly wants the state government to come up with policies that will checkmate activities of illegal miners in the state.

This was sequel to a Motion on Notice titled “Need to Curb illegal Miners in Kwara State” moved by member representing Ilorin Central Abubakar Magaji-Olawoyin.

According to him, unlicensed miners are tapping minerals resources at Ifelodun, Baruten and Kaiama Local Government Areas of the State hence the urgent need for government to encourage investors to secure mining license from federal government to explore the sector.

Other legislators who contributed during the debate stressed the need for a holistic approach in addressing the menace of illegal mining activities which they observed possess health, environmental and security risks to the people.

The Speaker, Engineer Yakubu Danlad-Salihu enjoined the Ministries of Environment and Enterprise to liase with appropriate committees of the House to surmount the challenges inherent in illegal Mining in the state and urged security agencies to shutdown all illegal mining sites in a bid to restore normalcy in affected communities.
