The National Universities Commission, NUC has named the University of Ibadan, UI as the best federal institution in the country for 2021.

The NUC made this known at a two-day capacity building workshop organised by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund in Abuja Monday.

Speaking at the event, Professor Peter Okebukola, NUC’s former executive secretary, noted that this year’s ranking involved 113 universities and was done using 12 indicators.

Professor Okebukola, who led the NUC’s committee on the ranking, said the institutions were ranked using a total number of full-time students, the number of international students, students and staff ratio, efficiency, google scholar index, and contribution to the knowledge economy.

Other criteria, according to him, include the percentage of international staff, the percentage of programmes with full-time accreditation, and all citations per capital.

He also disclosed that the Federal University of Technology Akure came second on the list adding that the full report on the ranking would be made available to the NUC and uploaded on its website in due course.

In a remarks, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, executive secretary of the NUC, said the 2022 edition of the ranking would be more comprehensive.

Professor Rasheed commended the ranking committee for coming up with a distinct template for the ranking of Nigerian universities.

He also called for improved funding for universities in Nigeria to enable them to operate at international standards.
