Governments at all levels have been advised to put modalities in place for establishment of ranches to eradicate clashes between farmers and herders in the country.
A Professor of Animal Science, University of Ilorin, Moshood Belewu gave the advice in an exclusive interview with correspondent Lanre Omotoso.
Professor Belewu said that ranching, as practiced in developed countries; enable cows to produce more milk and meats that would serves as additional income to their owners.
He suggested that areas earmarked for ranching should contain social amenities such as schools and clinics to be habitable for the herders as well as forages and water to feed their flocks.
The animal scientist emphasized that modernization had turn most farmland into industrial parks and housing estates, leaving limited land for farming that often resulted to clashes between herders and farmers.
While noting that most herders that caused frictions were wanderers who rustle cattle of others, Professor Belewu called for proper documentation of indigenous herders for adequate monitoring.
The university don called for proper enlightenment for herders to be educated on advantages of ranches over open grazing.
