WORLD COOPERATIVE DAY: NIGERIANS ENJOINED TO JOIN COOPERATIVE SOCIETY TO REDUCE POVERTY

As the world commemorates International Day of Cooperatives, Nigerians have been enjoined to join cooperative society to help them have access to wealth and eliminate poverty.

Chairman, Harmony 103.5 FM cooperative society, Idofian in Ifelodun local government of Kwara State, Mr Yusuff Oyeniyi-Wasiu gave the advice in an exclusive interview with Lanre Omotoso to mark this year International Day of Cooperatives.

Mr Oyeniyi-Wasiu said joining cooperative would help members to shoulder some financial challenges such as building of houses, purchase of vehicles and payment of children school fees.

He stressed that personal savings may not be able to buy cars, build houses and pay children school, but being a member of cooperative would enable them to acess loans and payback without much stress.

Because co-operatives are people-oriented and not capital-centred , the chairman of Harmony 103.5 FM cooperative society noted that the society is unique because of its interest free status to better life of members to meet their financial obligations.

Mr Oyeniyi-Wasiu emphasized that emergencies such as medical bills and unforeseen circumstances may gulp individual savings, but involvement in cooperatives would cater for such emergencies.

Mr Oyeniyi-Wasiu called on members of cooperatives worldwide to protect their heritage by paying back their loans, have mutual understanding among themselves, have sincerity of purposes and be selfless to elongate their cooperative societies.

The International Day of Cooperatives is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of July, through which citizens can improve their lives while contributing to the economic, social, cultural and political advancement of their community and nation.

The theme for this year International Day of Cooperatives is “Rebuild better together”.
