Nigerian youths have been advised not to celebrate corruption and questionable wealth, but rather be concerned with source of suspicious wealth.

The Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ilorin Zonal Command, ACE Atinuke Akinroyeje made the call at a one-day symposium, with the theme: “Say ‘No’ To Get Rich Quick Syndrome” organized by Stream One TOP-UP Mass Communication Department Students of Kwara State University, KWASU, held at Government Secondary School, (GSS) Maraba in Ilorin.

Akinroyeje, who was represented by the Head of Public Affairs Department, Mr. Ayodele Babatunde, advised parents to desist from comparing their children with their mates who have made financial breakthroughs, as it forces many youth to develop the mentality of making money through any possible means.

The EFCC boss maintained that “Get Rich Quick Syndrome” is a mentality that has its root in corruption and urged the students to develop good mentality of becoming someone of good reputation in the society.

He decried the rising spate of killings for rituals, kidnapping for ransom and cybercrime “Yahoo Yahoo” in our society today, attributing them to wrong mentality of getting money at all cost, and urged the youth to desist from such.

While advising members of the public to protect their bank details and be careful in giving their mobile phones to people who could use their account for fraudulent activities, the EFCC Boss urged the people to download Eagle App on their phones, so as to easily alert the anti-corruption agency of any fraudulent act they notice around them.

Earlier in an address of welcome, the Head, Mass Communication Department, Dr. Semiu Bello, who was represented by a lecturer in the department, Dr. Kamaldin Babatunde, explained that the event was one out of the series embarked on by the University to impact and contribute to community development.

Also speaking, Mr. Victor Babatunde and Mr. Suleiman Yusuf who are also lecturers in the department, tasked the students not to engage in the act of Getting Rich Quick, but to use their mentality for positive growth.

Also, the Principal, Government Secondary School, Maraba Ilorin, Alhaji Toyin Awodi who was represented by Vice Principal Academics – Mr Ajibade RA advised the students to distance themselves from examination malpractice and other social vices.
