2020 World Soil Day: Expert Cautions Against Killing of Soil Nutrients

Nigerians have been urged to desist from acts such as bush burning, illegal construction and dumping of toxic waste to guide against loosing nutrients in the soil.

President, Soil Science Society of Nigeria, Professor Bashir Raji made the call in an exclusive interview with Lanre Omotoso in Ilorin.

Speaking on the theme for this year’s World Soil Day, ‘Keep soil alive, protect soil diversity’, Professor Raji said human activities against the soil result to lost of micro nutrients that support proper crop growth.

He identified micro organism that support crop growth as fungi, bacteria, earthworm, rodents, termite and insects which their activities on the soil add nutrients.

While noting that healthy soil leads to healthy living, the President, Soil Science Society of Nigeria called for activities that would not degrade the soil nutrients.

World Soil Day is held annually on December Five as a means to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources.

Food and Agriculture Organization unanimously endorsed World Soil Day in June 2013 and requested its official adoption at the 68th United Nations General Assembly.

In December 2013, the United Nations General Assembly responded by designating December Five 2014 as the first official World Soil Day.
