There is no doubt that the legislature in a democracy can be likened to the Nucleus-ambiguus in the human anatomy where synapsis occurs, little wonder whenever there is a military coup, the first arm of government to be disbanded is the parliament.

This analogy shows how significant the legislature is, to the past and present democratic settings in Nigeria and Kwara inclusive.

When the Ninth Legislature was inaugurated on the 11th day of June 2019, people had divergent opinions; while some expressed fears over what they termed “inexperience” of the majority of house members, others were wondering how a young man from the academic terrain with engineering background could pilot the affairs of a State House of Assembly successfully.

But so far, I make bold to say that, Right Honourable Yakubu Danladi-Salihu representing Ilesha/Gwanara Constituency who emerged Speaker of the Ninth Legislature and his colleagues in Kwara State House of Assembly have proven the proverbial Prophets of Doom wrong.

After a careful election of principal officers by the Honourable members, the Ninth legislature in Kwara State is also _afortunado_ to have an experienced administrator per excellence and career civil servant as its Clerk in the person of Hajia Halimat Jummai Kperogi, and thus the members hit the ground running as lawmakers with a clear vision to achieve the mission of making a difference in the legislature.

Most Nigerians often forget that all that is required to perform exceptionally well in a public office is determination and sincerity of purpose.

Correct me if I am wrong, Right Honourable Yakubu Danladi-Salihu and his colleagues have broken the record in making the Kwara State House of Assembly a truly people’s parliament in view of the legislative duties and numbers of Bills and Motions moved in the last 2 years.

Some of the Bills and Motions include:
– Kwara State Social Investment Program Bill, 2019.
– Kwara State Sports Council Commission Bill, 2019.
– Kwara State Compulsory Free Universal Basic Education (Amendment) Bill, 2020.
-Kwara Geographic Information Service Bill, 2020.
-Kwara State Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply (Establishment) Agency Bill, 2020.
-Governor and Deputy Governor (payment of pension) (Repeal) Bill, 2020.
-Kwara State Investment Promotion Agency (KWIPA) Bill, 2020 and many others.

The motions are:
-Need for Urgent Control of Community Spread of COVID-19 Pandemic in Kwara State.
-Indiscriminate Construction of Bumps and Speed Breakers on Roads in the state capital.
-Need for Pragmatic Policy to Enhance Consistent Availability of Oxygen in Kwara Hospitals.
-Need to Control High Cost of Food Items in Kwara State.
-Need to Reposition Kwara State Staff Development College for Optimum Result.
-Need to Curb Activities of Illegal Miners.
-Need to Implement Kwara State Security Trust Fund Law and many others.

The Constituency projects put in place in Ilesha/Gwanara in the last 2 years by Honourable Yakubu Danladi-Salihu are monumental and unprecedented in the history of the area and in the whole of Northern part of Kwara State and it is only those who chose political mischieve as their stock in trade that would deny this fact. The people of the constituency have never had it so good until the gentle, humble and amiable Danladi came on board.

The other Honourable members are not left behind in implementing various meaningful and laudable constituency projects independently for their people and in most instances, His Excellency Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq is usually on the ground to inaugurate the projects. This is another clear departure from the past because lawmakers are now ‘free’ to mete out empowerment for their people as and when due.

Another milestone of the Ninth Assembly in Kwara State is the smooth working relationship between the Executive and Legislative arms of government which has been given a misconception that they are rubber-stamp lawmakers. May I ask: “Must there always be a crisis between the various arms of government?” It is illogical for people to think that until the Executive and the Legislative arms of government are constantly at loggerheads before things can actually work fine in the country.

Right Honourable Yakubu Danladi-Salihu’s account of his stewardship in the last two years as contained in his scorecard is also a departure from the much rhetoric that youth in public office are found of misusing and abusing the opportunity.

This young Engineer and Academic has been making his generation proud through his gentle and humble conduct within and outside Kwara State and one can only look forward to a more successful journey in the legislative arm of government in Kwara State.

Rt. Hon. Danladi-Salihu has also successfully demystified the office of the number three citizen in Kwara state, making himself available to all and closing the gap between his colleagues and other public office holders in the business of governance, this is why many people described him as a friend of all.

Go to his Constituency or even in his office, one does not have to pass through some bottlenecks or bureaucracy before having unfettered access to the university teacher turned politician before having an engagement with him.

His humbleness to a fault as well as rare but genuine intent to change the narrative of ‘old order’ has also contributed immensely to his fast-growing political popularity especially among the youths and stakeholders in Progressives politics, a development many consider a threat to their political relevance.

The Kwara Ninth Assembly Speaker has since won the heart of many as a result of his simplicity and sincerity in handling issues or matter brought before him, this is a statement of fact that is verifiable anywhere.

The good people of Kwara State across the sixteen Local Government Areas and the twenty-four constituencies should continue to rally round these outstanding Honourable members who have succeeded in changing the narrative of parliamentary affairs in the State.

As the Engineer Yakubu Danladi-Salihu led House of Assembly enters the third year to fulfil its mandate to the people of Kwara State, one can not but expect more people-oriented policies and programmes because the Speaker has on many occasions reaffirmed the commitment of the legislature to purposeful synergy with the Executive arm of government in providing more dividends of democracy to Kwarans irrespective of their political, cultural or religious affiliation.
