As the world commemorates International Mother Earth Day, Nigerians have been enjoined to plant more trees and vegetation to combat climate change.
A lecturer in the department of forest resources management, University of Ilorin, Dr Folaranmi Babalola made the call in an exclusive interview with correspondent Lanre Omotoso.
Dr Babalola said planting trees and vegetation instead of concrete within compound and roadsides would enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the collapse of biodiversity.
He itemized causes of climate change to include bush burning, emission of fossil fuel and dumping of plastic in the ocean which damage the environment, hence the need to desist from such attitude.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s mother earth day “Restore our Earth” the environmentalist emphasized that planting trees would amount to wind breaker, create cool environment as well as releasing oxygen that human-being need for breathing.
Dr Babalola stressed that climate change leads to loss of biodiversity, increase temperature, reduces amount of rainfalls and increase intense of sunshine, noted that the earth must be restored to her former position to reduce global warming.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed April Twenty-Two as International Mother Earth Day through a resolution adopted in 2019.
The Day recognises the Earth and its ecosystems as humanity’s common home and the need to protect her to enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the collapse of biodiversity.
