GLAUCOMA WEEK: OPTOMETRIST ADVISES NIGERIANS ON REGULAR EYE TEST TO PREVENT BLINDNESS

As the World is marking Glaucoma Week, Nigerians have been urged to undergo regular eye test to prevent blindness.

An optometrist with Vision passport network services, Dr Neche Onyeachu made the appeal in an exclusive interview with correspondent,  Lanre Omotoso in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local government of Kwara State.

Dr Onyeachu said glaucoma does not present any form of symptoms, hence the need for individual, race, age or status to subject themselves to periodical eye examination to determine their eye position.

Speaking on this year theme of World Glaucoma Week ‘The world is bright, save your sight’ the optometrist emphasized that Eighty percent damage would have been done to the eye before the vision become blur.

He noted that anyone with history of glaucoma in their families and diabetes were liable to glaucoma, urging them to always do the needful.

While noting that glaucoma is the most common cause of irreversible blindness, Dr Onyeachu stressed that lifestyles such as too much intake of caffeine, smoking, age and injury could induced glaucoma.

Statistics has it that about Eighty Million people have glaucoma, which indicates that one in Two Hundred people aged Forty, which rises to one in eight by aged Eighty.

World Glaucoma Week is an initiative of the World Glaucoma Association which is observed between March Seven to Thirteen, for year 2021.
