Offa Poly Student Sentenced to Nine Months Imprisonment

A Twenty three year old HND 1 Student of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, Oladipo Opeyemi Juwon has been sentenced to nine months imprisonment by Justice Mahmood Abdulgafar of the Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin over his involvement in internet scam.

A statement by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ilorin Zonal Office, Head of Media & Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, indicates that the sentence followed his arraignment on a three-count charge bordering on cheating and attempted to cheat contrary to and punishable under Section 324 of Penal Code Law of Kwara State.

Oladipo pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

Following his plea an operative of the EFCC, Enoch Onyedikachi was called into the witness box to review the facts of the case.

Similarly, Counsel to EFCC, Andrew Akoja, who told the court how the crime was perpetuated, explained that on the 7th of September, this year, EFCC, Ilorin Zonal Office received anonymous petition from some concerned citizens in Offa about activities of some internet fraudsters in the area, which prompted the Commission to place surveillance.

Akoja maintained that on the 14th of September, EFCC Ilorin zonal office raided the place leading to the arrest of the defendant and other suspects

In his judgment, Justice Abdulgafar said that following evidence placed, plea of the defendant, exhibits tendered, the uncontradicted and unchallenged testimonies of the sole prosecution witness, hold the view that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubts.

The judge further said that the court finds the accused guilty as charged and sentenced him to three months imprisonment on count 1 with option of fine of One Hundred Thousand Naira only, Three months imprisonment on count two with option of fine of One Hundred Thousand Naira only and three months imprisonment on count three with Fifty Thousand Naira only as option of fine.

Justice Abdulgafar who ordered that his mobile phones be forfeited and victims restituted, added that the sentence would commence on the 23rd of this month in view of ongoing examinations at the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, involving the convict.
