Kwara State House of Assembly has urged the state road traffic management Agency, KWARTMA, to intensify enlightenment programme on use of road signs in partnership with unions of commercial drivers and business owners.
This was sequel to the adoption of motion on notice titled “Need to Curb indiscriminate parking of vehicles and use of No Parking signs on roads in major cities and towns in Kwara State” by the member representing Okuta-yashikira Constituency, Mallam Muhammed Baba-Salihu.
Mr Baba-Salihu while presenting the motion expressed concern that significant percentage of commercial drivers, motorcycle riders and tricycle operators exhibit what he described as careless attitude when parking at roadside to pick up passengers.
He also observed that owners of business premises and retail shops have resorted to indiscriminate use of “No Parking ” signs in frontage of their business premises thereby denying other tax payers access to park.
The house urged leadership of various transport unions including tricycle associations to encourage their members to ensure decorum and restrict their operations to motor parks.
The house also urged the Kwara State Government to employ more personnel for KWARTMA to enable the agency perform its legal functions more effectively and efficiently.
In their various contributions, the lawmakers pointed out that the menace of indiscriminate parking of vehicles and tricycles is becoming an eyesore not only in Ilorin metropolis but other major towns in Kwara State such as Offa, Omu-Aran, Oro, Ajasse, Kaiama among others.
The house called on federal road safety corps and KWARTMA to be alive to their responsibilities by ensuring that violators are liable to appropriate penalties adding that the state government and the sixteen local government areas should explore it as an additional source of internally generated revenue
