Stop depending on foreign media to cover local events, Lai Muhammed told Nigerian Journalists

The Nigeria media have been charged to always take the lead in telling Nigerian stories to avoid damage and misrepresentation by the foreign media.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed who made this call during the inauguration of Radio Nigeria Ogo-Ilu 89.3FM at Oko, Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State decried the role played by CNN in its investigative report on the Lekki Toll Gate protest.

Alhaji Lai Muhammed said it is no longer acceptable for indigenous media houses to rely on foreign media platforms for events that happen within their shores.

The Minister described Ogo-Ilu 89.3FM as a Constituency project of Mr Olusegun Odebunmi representing Ogo-Oluwa-Surulere Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives noting that it is the first of its kind in the country and commended him for the laudable achievement.

Alhaji Lai Muhammed urged the people of Oko community in Oyo state to see the station as their own and protect jealously because it will bring government closer to the grassroots because radio remains the most effective means of disseminating information.

Earlier Director General of FRCN, Dr Mansur Liman while also applauding the federal lawmaker, Olusegun Odebunmi for partnering with Radio Nigeria in setting up the radio station said Ogo-Ilu 89.3FM has added to the wide reach of Radio Nigeria as the largest network in Nigeria and Africa at large.

The Zonal Director, FRCN Ibadan Zonal Station, Alhaji Muhammed Bello thanked the federal government for giving priority to bringing itself closer to the people.

In a remark, the initiator of the project and member representing Ogo-Oluwa-Ogo-Oluwa-surulere Federal Constituency, Mr Olusegun Odebunmi said he was motivated to make the radio station his constituency project to make his people have first hand information on policies and programs of government and nip the menace of fake news in the bud.

There were goodwill messages from traditional rulers such as Oranmiyan of Oko land, Oba Solomon Oyeyemi, Aresa of Iresa-Apa, Oba Moses Ajiboye, Olugbon of Orile-Igbon land, representatives of the Oyo state government and former Governor Adebayo Alao Akala, management team of FRCN including the General Manager of Radio Nigeria Harmony FM Idofian, Alhaji Abdulmualiy Olanrewaju Adegboyega who stood in for Zonal Director North Central Zone, Mallam Haruna Idris.
