UNIVERSITY DON SUGGESTS WAYS TO ENSURE MILK AFFORDABILITY

As the World marks Milk Day, Nigerians have been enjoined to make efforts towards making milk parts of their daily consumption.

Professor Moshood Belewu of department of animal production, University of Ilorin gave the advice in an exclusive interview with Lanre Omotoso to commemorate this year World Milk Day.

Professor Belewu said milk could be derived from cow, buffalo and goats, hence the need for every household in Nigeria to rear them for their daily milk consumption.

The animal scientist emphasized that goat which is known as poor man’s cow in India could produce up to Three kilograms of milk per day that would serve as nutrient booster for a family as well as source of income.

He opined that excess milk derived from the animals could be processed into ice-cream, cheese and yoghurt to serve as additional income for the family.

Professor Belewu stressed that goat milk contains same nutrients as that of lactating mother which helped to develop brain of children, make them smart and sharp, called on government to include it in the school feeding program.

The University don noted that daily consumption of a glass of milk per person would eliminate diseases such as kwashiorkor, insomnia and ulcer.

In 2001, Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations designated June First as World Milk Day to recognize importance of milk as a global food, and the theme for this year is “Sustainability in the dairy sector”.
