‘WE WILL LEGISLATE TO MAKE LIFE MORE BEARABLE FOR YOU’, KWARA SPEAKER ASSURES PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

The Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Engr. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu says the Ninth Legislature would do everything possible within the ambit of the law to give necessary support to all persons with disabilities, PWD in the state.

 

 

Engr. Danladi-Salihu gave the assurance when the Kwara State Chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPID paid him an advocacy visit to seek for amendment of the Kwara State Disability Law passed by the Eighth Kwara Assembly and signed into law by former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed in 2017.

 

The Speaker reiterated the commitment of the legislative arm of government under his leadership towards improvement of the lives of persons with disabilities stressing that being disabled is never a course hence the need to help PWD to assist others too.

 

“Disability isn’t a curse, we have people with disabilities in families and communities around us and we need to support them to live a better lives and to help others too by taking them off the street. I want to assure you that the Ninth Legislature would look into all your demands and work with relevant stakeholders to make sure there is improvement in the lives of persons with disabilities”

Ealier, the Kwara State Chairman of JONAPID, Comrade Yusuf Bashir commended what he termed as benevolent leadership style of the Rt. Hon. Speaker and his support for persons with disabilities.

 

Comrade Bashir explained that the JONAPID is seeking amendment of the Kwara Disability Law 2017 to conform with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018 assented to by President Buhari by making provision for among others; free and continual medical treatment for PWD in public health facilities and free tuition at all public educational institutions as against the subsidy provided for in the existing law.

 

He also wanted the law to make provision for the participation of PWD in politics, establishment of Disability Affairs office to be manned by qualified PWD employment of five percent of PWD in all MDAs among others.

 

The Kwara State Chapter of JONAPID was led on the courtesy visit to the Rt Hon Speaker by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Need, Hon. Solihu Habeeb, Kwara JONAPID Chairman, Comrade Bashir Yusuf, Barrister Monsurat Alaya among other executives and members of the Association.
