Borno state government has directed the stoppage of construction of new petrol filling stations in Maiduguri metropolis and environs.

Executive Secretary Borno State Geographic Information Service BOGIS, Alhaji Adam Bababe gave the directive while briefing journalists in Maiduguri.

Alhaji Bababe observed the indiscriminate erection of petrol stations in residential areas which portend danger to inhabitants of the location.

According to him, a committee has been set up and preliminary investigation shows that there are over 200 filling stations within the city center and many more are still springing up, hence the decision by the government.

“The outcome of that exercise will now tell us whether we will demolish some filling stations or shift some. But for now it should be clear that no more new filling station that has not been approved before now will be given approval”.

The Executive Secretary said the Agency has also embarked on removal of temporary shelters and commercial shops on major highways to sanitise the city and get rid of criminal activities in the metropolis.

He stressed that government is not considering the revocation of any land but only encouraging land owners to regularise their land titles.
