The Federal Government  is set to commence dredging and channelisation project of Asa River in Ilorin, Kwara State by the middle of September. This is coming after the Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, on behalf of the State, requested for the swift intervention of the Federal Government on the issue of the perennial flood that befalls the environs of the river which wreaks havocs and displaces the communities while causing environmental degradation.

The dredging and channelisation project which will bring a lasting solution to the problem of flooding that has plagued the State for many years is slated to be completed and delivered within 18 months.

At this juncture,  I want to appreciate our amiable Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his consistent proactiveness and unwavering support to the Ministry in ensuring a cleaner, safer and more conducive environment for the good people of Kwara state.

The Governor, in his usual responsive manner approved the emergency evacuation of blockages from Asa River to avert loss of lives and properties. The exercise which started on Thursday is currently ongoing as an interim measure to ensure free flow of water while we await the kickoff of the project by Eurobel International Ltd, the firm contracted by the Federal Government to handle the dredging and Channelisation of the river.

The officials of the Ecological Funds Office in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Environment in a mini handing over ceremony held at Isale Koko, last week Friday officially handed the project over to the Eurobel team and has been slated to begin in the coming weeks.

In conclusion, I urge every citizen of the state to take responsibility of their surroundings and join hands with the State Government to achieve a more hygienic, safer and conducive Kwara. Kindly be reminded that dumping of refuse in the waterways and on the road medians is prohibited and offenders will be sanctioned accordingly.

Signed:
Banigbe Remilekun Oluwatobi
Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Kwara State
