Military Charged To Treat Repentant Terrorists Within Human Right Confine

The National Human Rights Commission NHRC has charged the military to carry out profiling and investigation of surrendered Boko Haram insurgents in a professional manner and within the confine of human right.

Executive Secretary of the Commission Mr Tony Ojukwu gave the charge at a two day training on mainstreaming human rights and civilian protection into counter insurgency operation collaboration in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

Represented by Director Women and Children of the Commission, Mr Harry Obe, the Executive Secretary said there is need to carefully assess people surrendering that are worthy of rehabilitation and consider justice to all sides, that is the victims, perpetrators and the society.

“In their investigation, they have to respect the rights of the insurgents as they are expected to be professionals in whatever they do, as they respect rights,.they can also emphasise on accountability according to law, no law actually encourages violations of rights, Mr Ojukwu maintained “.

Mr Tony Ojukwu therefore remarked that the military need to prosecute the insurgency operations to win the hearts and minds of the civilian population.

Borno state Coordinator of the Commission Mrs Jummai Mshelia observed that there have great improvement with regards to respect of human rights by the military at the frontline.

One of the participants Lieutenant Commander Jamil Omaki commended the Human Rights Commission for organizing the workshop at a time when the armed forces is actively involved in internal security operation.

He maintained that issues of human right and humanitarian law in conflict situations cannot be overemphasized.

The workshop on mainstreaming human rights is organized by the National Human Rights Commission in collaboration with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR.
