As the World marks desertification and drought day, Nigerians have been enjoined to practice sustainable agriculture to mitigate effect of desertification and drought.

A lecturer in the Department of Forest Resources Management, University of Ilorin, Dr Tajudeen Amusa gave the advice in an exclusive interview with correspondent Lanre Omotoso to mark this year world desertification and drought day.

Dr Amusa said practicing sustainable agriculture such as planting of more trees, reducing overgrazing and maintenance of forest reserves and national parks for their purposes would reduce negative effects of desertification and drought.

The University lecturer also advised federal government and international communities to make efforts towards recharging the lake chad to tackle farmers-herders clashes and banditry across the country.

Dr Amusa reiterated that lake chad had been a source of livelihood for herders, fishermen and farmers within the region, noting that recharging it would reduce their migration.

Speaking on this year theme “Restoration. Land. Recovery. We build back better with healthy land” Dr Amusa stressed that more efforts must be taking to restore degraded land to perform its ecological and socio-economic status.

The university lecturer noted that restoring degraded land would bring economic resilience, create jobs, raise incomes and increase food security, help biodiversity to recover as well as lock away the atmospheric carbon warming the Earth.
