Wife of the Kwara State Governor Dr.Olufolake AbdulRazaq has inaugurated a 21-man commitee on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in the state.
Dr Olufolake who appreciated the governor for the approval of the committee, charged members of the committee to discharge their responsibility without fear or favour.
While inaugurating the committee she said the spate of violence against women especially rape had become disturbingly rampant and also more evident during the lockdown necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise in these cases has made it imperative to scale up multidimensional approaches and strategies to stem the tide.
Dr Olufolake noted that all the facilities and laws existed in Kwara hence the need to set up the commitee while appreciating the Governor for approving the committee.
Wife of the Kwara State Governor said the most positive and undisputable trend in the fight to end violence against women has been the resilience and determination of women themselves to survive.
Dr.Olufolake charged all members of the Committee to ensure that they evolve initiatives to bolster the drive to ensure that the communities are rid of this menaceand put in their best into the assignment and justify the trust reposed in them by the state government.
In her welcome address, the Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Deborah Aremu noted that violence against women in terms of sexual abuse, rape, murder and domestic violence is on the increase,said the setting up the committee in every state of the federation is a bold initiative by the Nigeria Governor’s Wives Forum to fight all forms of abuse among minors and women.
Other stakeholders present at the event tasked the government on justice for all women and girls going through abuse and violence while asking that the government to provide a special court for the prosecution of sexual offences.
