UNIVERSITY DON CALLS FOR MEASURES TO BRIDGE DIGITAL DIVIDE IN NIGERIA

Nigeriangovernment has been urged to put necessary measures in place in the area of Information and Communication Technology so as not to be found wanting in the digital world.

Dean, Faculty of Communication and Information Science, University of Ilorin, Professor Rasheed Jimoh gave the advice in an exclusive interview with correspondent Lanre Omotoso.

Professor Jimoh said developed countries have utilized Information and Communication Technology to facilitate growth in their economy, agriculture, education and security sectors, hence the need for Nigeria to do so.

He also stressed that developed countries had used Information and Communication Technology to reduce crime with proper identity management.

The University Don maintained that with help of closed-circuit television, CCTV camera, criminals were easily apprehended without police running after them in developed countries such as United State of America, Germany, Dubai, Malaysia and United Kingdom among others.

While noting that Nigeria is yet to attain fifth industrial revolution known as 5G, Professor Jimoh called for policy that would make the third industrial revolution known as 3G penetrate every nooks and corners of the country.

Professor Jimoh acknowledged that there should not be digital divide in any parts of the country to achieve even development economically and educationally.

The Dean, Faculty of Communication and Information Science, University of Ilorin emphasized that with digital penetration in every villages and cities in Nigeria, farmers in the remotest areas would be able to sell their produce through internet.
